Weirdo (best of “Day by Day”)

She’s a tad strange, this one. A misfit. In a world flooded with drama and distractions, she is unaffected, staying safe when debris floats past: You know, dangerous junk like fear, doubt, foolishness. It might graze her but doesn’t penetrate. It can’t, ’cause this girl is different: Grounded, confident. Unheard of.

You might know her. She’s easy to spot, not because she’s flashy or flirty or particularly striking. In fact, she hates the “all eyes on me” mentality. For her, it’s all eyes on them, friends and strangers needing truth or shoes or kindness. She thinks of others before herself. Weird.

Some call her naïve, predictable. I prefer to say she avoids the waters of hypocrisy, regrets, wasted time. This girl is smart. She knows who she is, what she wants. And when you meet her, you know, too: An in-love-with-Jesus chick who honors Him completely. Refreshing.

How does she stand up to the world’s pressures? How can she look pretty without being sexy; seem interesting without being wild, and be successful without being mean? No easy order, for sure. But this girl, with the power of God, is doing it. She’s in the world—loving others, finding purpose, having fun—without being overcome by it. Biblical.

It’s a gutsy move, sticking with God. It could cost her a friend. Or a vote. Or an invitation to the party of the year. Not always easy, but always rewarding. Trust me, this beautiful daughter is gonna be okay. In fact, she already is. Who respects her courageous faith? Almost everyone. Who trusts her wise advice? Same answer. And who blesses her life with sweetness unimaginable? God, Father, Savior, Friend. You see, when it comes to her swimming against the mainstream, He always equips the weirdos.

Be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe, as you hold out the word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16).

This post first appeared in October 2011 under the category “Day by Day.” I’ve tweaked it just a bit. During a short writing break in July, I’ll feature three “best of” posts from past blogs. Enjoy, and I’ll be back with fresh inspiration in August! ~Ava Sturgeon

  1. Melanie says:

I want to be a wierdo:) Never in a million years as a child did I ever dream or think I would be declaring this? the word says” we are to be aliens here, a peculiar people,” so we better get over what people think. I am IN, clinging to the Cross..but I see the more I die to what the world has to offer.. Jesus does bring me more peace and security than anything else.. this world is not my home..
