To my boy-crazy daughter (best of “Boy Talk”)

My Precious Daughter,

Hello, from your Heavenly Father! I know we talk often–it’s one of my favorite things, hearing your voice. And I love watching you grow. There’s so much about you—those sparkling eyes, that huge laugh, your tender heart—that makes me smile.

Because I love you, it’s time for a chat–Mainly, about whom you’ll marry. Sure, it’s years away, but I’ve already spotted the groom. In fact, when you were born, I said, “This girl is wonderfully made! I know who’s perfect for her. In fact, it’s a match made in Heaven.”

And so I’m maturing him with you in mind. Want to know the details? Here’s a hint: He’ll treat you like gold. He’ll love character more than beauty, so you’ll feel secure. He’ll encourage big dreams, so you’ll feel respect. And he’ll follow Jesus, so you’ll feel connected. Even now, I’m molding his spiritual strength. He’s learning that his future wife—you, my daughter—will love Me with everything she has.

That’s my plan. Now here’s my concern: Sometimes I sense a stubborn streak trying to emerge. I’ve also seen a twinge of insecurity when you feel alone. These are potential plan changers, dangerous side roads. If they take root, sweetheart, you might ignore my matchmaking skills. You might take matters into your own hands. And either would be costly.

Please listen because I see it all: Don’t fall for the wrong guy! In fact, don’t even flirt with him. This world is full of sneaky traps, lies from Satan and from boys who don’t know me. Their schemes lead to heartache, consequences, and regret. Believe in my plan–it’s a good one. Just keep listening, keep following, and when the time’s right, I’ll show you a man who’s worthy. Do you remember the promises in Jeremiah 29:11-13? I wrote them just for you:

I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:11-13).

With eternal love,

Your Father God

Cathy, I would love to know of a similar article for young men as well! Try as I might, God has not given me the ability to write from a male perspective. How ironic, since I helped raise two sons. 🙂 Maybe we’ll get an answer to your question. God bless, Ava Sturgeon
