Finally—Yippee!—A light bulb went off. I get it now! For years I’ve tried to change so you’d approve. So you’d like me, even. It’s no secret I can be spoiled, selfish, lazy, and mean—Well, hopefully not all at once, but you’ve seen the occasional drama queen: It ain’t always pretty. So how—HOW—could you, the perfect Creator, acknowledge my messy self? I used to think it’d take perfection to make you smile.
But I was wrong. Wrong! Happily, gloriously mistaken. It’s plain as day in your Word: When you look at me, Father, you see beauty, inside and out. You notice me. And you actually like what you see. Every hair on my head, each desire in my soul. You watch me coming and going, and your hearts bursts with love. Pure love, regardless of how I measure up. What sweet relief. Seems too good to be true.
But it is true. I can’t make you love me more. I can’t make you stop. You just do, forever and always. You simply love me, even if I stay the same. Even if I stay the same.
I don’t want to stay the same, Lord. You love me BIG, so I want to give you honor. I want to grow up, mature spiritually, but not ‘cause I need your approval. Through Jesus’ blood, I have that already. I want to adore you —with my whole heart, soul, and mind—because I owe everything to you. Because you loved me first. And because you’re worth it.
So that’s my light bulb moment, God: If I stay the same, you’ll love me. But since you love me, I want to be different. Honestly, this scares me a little: It’ll have to start small, okay? There’s lots of work to do. 🙂 But here’s another amazing thought: You’ll do the hard part, transforming me from the inside out. Your strength, not mine. Same ole me for awhile, but little by little, different. Better. More like you.
Thanks for greater love than I’ll ever imagine. Thanks for noticing me, seeing my potential, and smiling with acceptance. We’ll be talking often, you know. That’s the starting point, right? And I’ll be listening, too. A little change, a lot of love. Starting right now.
