Sister talk

Dear Younger Sister in Christ,

This letter is for you, even if we’ve never met. Even if I don’t know your heart or what makes you laugh. The thing is, we share some special DNA, straight from Father God, so you’re dear to me. He has lots of daughters, our Heavenly Father—teens and moms and grandmas. You and me. All on His big ole lap, where He calls us by name.

I’m plumb tickled (that’s Alabama talk for “happy”) that you’re a Jesus follower. You—a young woman with unbelievable potential, thanks to a Holy heritage—are following Jesus. Not simply admiring Him. Not knowing about Him. You, my head-on-straight sister, are following. Walking so closely you can smell His compassion. Taking that nail-scarred hand and squeezing tight. You = follower of Him. Me = proud of you.

As your older sister, I’ve been there. I know how tough life can be, especially when those around you are, well, less than devoted. It can be lonely, frustrating, and heartbreaking. But yet you hold firm. (How do you do it? Ahh, I know well, my like-minded sis. It’s a daily, supernatural reliance.) You are sincere, maturing, and I see your shining light all the way from my house. You dig into the Word with passion. You sense opportunities to share Truth. And then you take them.

Just this morning as I read 1 John, you popped into my mind. Oh, how thankful I am that you’re sticking with Jesus! You’ve seen His works, heard His voice, and felt His love. And that, my sister, is a recipe for  joy. Here’s the passage that brought me to tears as I saw your beautiful face:

We [you and me, sis] proclaim Jesus, who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw Him with our own eyes and touched Him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.  This One who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen Him. And now we testify and proclaim that He is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then He was revealed to us. We proclaim what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you [those yet to meet Him] may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy. (1 John 1:1-4)

Those tears are back. Can you comprehend my relief that you truly see what I see? Hear what I hear? Feel what I feel? The awesome glory of God, spoiling us with abundance, joy, and peace? We are so blessed! And I’m bustin’ with pride that you’re also choosing this narrow, well-worn path. Like sister, like sister. 🙂

As I close this piece of fan mail (you ARE awesome, just know), please accept a word of caution: Remember that others are looking. Sisters younger than you—those starting the journey, those needing guidance—have a fragile set of footprints. They gobble up everything you say—trust me on this one. They love hearing the intimate way you pray. They expect the Bible verse on your Facebook status to match your profile pic. At all costs, please keep your credibility! Be a clear, consistent path to the One you follow. As your older sister, I’ll do the same.

So follow on, little sis. Follow on.
